How can you keep your relationship with your child strong?

Now that your Illinois divorce is final, you have your visitation schedule and can plan how best to connect with your child during that limited time. Quality may be better than quantity, but you still want to maintain that same family relationship with your child rather than becoming a visitor. What can you do to keep that bond strong?

According to OurFamilyWizard.com, not only should you clear your schedule during your time with your child, you should also set aside the things that are causing you stress, as much as you can. You want to be able to focus solely on your child, and anxiety over bills or work situations can keep you from being an attentive parent.

It is not a good idea to become a "Disneyland parent," keeping your child entertained and busy from the moment you pick him or her up until the moment of drop-off. Not only does that set up unrealistic expectations going forward, it also does not give time to establish a healthy routine. While you definitely do need to plan fun outings and activities, these can be as uncomplicated as a couple of hours at the park, a movie or a game. A bedtime routine that includes snuggles and a story may be more effective for strengthening your relationship than a trip to a theme park.

You and the other parent probably established best times for you to contact your child during the days when you are not together. Do not let any of these slide. If you can play an online game with your child, speak face-to-face through an app or even simply make a quick phone call right before bedtime, it will reassure your child that you are still invested in the relationship the two of you have.

While this information about visitation schedules may help you plan for time with your child, it is intended for educational purposes only.
